Washington, D.C. — New analysis from the Center for American Progress estimates that at least 2.6 million people are employed nationwide in industries that are particularly at risk from retaliatory actions taken by China, Canada, and the European Union in response to the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs.
This new CAP column highlights the export industries in each state that are vulnerable to retaliatory tariffs against the United States from China, the European Union, and Canada. The Trump administration’s reckless trade wars will disproportionately affect American businesses, which could bear the brunt of the impact caused by the Trump administration’s massive new tariffs. Not only will American businesses face much higher operating costs as the price of imported materials and components goes up, but they will also face tariffs and other restrictions in foreign markets that make it harder to export.
This new column also features a state-by-state interactive map of the potential impacts of retaliatory measures on key export industries.
“American exporters will be hit particularly hard by the Trump administration’s reckless trade war and the retaliatory measures taken by trading partners in response,” said Natalie Baker, director of economic analysis at CAP and co-author of the column. “The impact will be felt by industries in all 50 states and by millions of American workers and their families.”
