Release: Congress Must Take More Steps on Technology Regulation Before It’s Too Late

Washington, D.C. — In the wake of the TikTok ban, a new column from the Center for American Progress argues that Congress must act now on privacy and children’s safety to prove it can take meaningful action on technology regulation.

The column notes that despite dozens of congressional hearings, the TikTok ban is the only significant technology measure passed into law in the past six years. Unfortunately, Congress has taken no significant action on popular bipartisan proposals to protect data privacy and children’s online safety.

“Congress must take the opportunity to pass meaningful bipartisan legislation on data privacy and children’s online safety,” said Adam Conner, vice president for Technology Policy at CAP and author of the column. “Members of Congress and the Biden administration would be wise to have a robust accomplishment to tout around real data protections for Americans—not just a TikTok ban.”

The column discusses the need for a federal privacy law and how that legislation will lay a foundation for any future AI regulation. It also explains how the bipartisan American Privacy Rights Act proposed by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) offers a legitimate opportunity this year to pass meaningful legislation that establishes a federal privacy law. The column notes the strong support in the Senate for several popular bipartisan children’s safety bills.
