Washington, D.C. — Jared Bernstein is joining the Center for American Progress as a senior fellow for economic policy. In this role, Bernstein will work closely with CAP’s economic experts to guide the development of policies that promote economic growth and fairness.
“I am thrilled to welcome Jared to CAP,” said CAP president and CEO Neera Tanden. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jared through several administrations, so I couldn’t be more excited for him to help lead CAP’s thinking in how to solve America’s biggest economic challenges and grow an economy that delivers for everyone.”
“From the Affordable Care Act to the Inflation Reduction Act, CAP has helped to craft some of the most effective policies that have long supported growth, jobs, health care, and better living standards for families who would otherwise be left behind,” said Bernstein. “But our policy work in this space is never done. We face huge new challenges in this political moment, which is why I’m so excited to work with the CAP team to build the policy agenda necessary to regain and maintain stable growth that reaches all Americans.”
Most recently, Bernstein was the chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers from 2023 to 2025. Previously, he served as the chief economist and economic adviser to then-Vice President Joe Biden and as the executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class from 2009 to 2011. Bernstein has also worked as a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and was a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute.
The author of numerous books and other publications and a frequent commentator on economic issues in the media, Bernstein also maintains a Substack where he discusses economics and politics. He is also a distinguished fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
