Washington, D.C. — Ahead of the G7 summit on June 14, a new column from the Center for American Progress outlines five key priorities that world leaders must address.
Absent leadership from President Donald Trump, the question now is not whether but how to move forward without the United States to address these critical issues:
- Defending Ukraine and deterring Russian aggression
- Ensuring economic cooperation amid rising fragmentation and competition with China
- Ending the war in Gaza, including addressing the humanitarian catastrophe and securing release of the hostages from Hamas
- Tackling the climate crisis with renewed urgency
- Addressing dire gaps left by the United States’ retrenchment from foreign aid
“Strong, clear cooperation among the world’s other leading democracies can help maintain momentum on key global priorities even as America withdraws,” said Allison McManus, managing director for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress and co-author of the column. “The G7 cannot afford to lower its sights to accommodate American retreat. The world’s most powerful democracies still have the leverage—and the responsibility—to act.”
