RELEASE: 5 Steps That Congress Should Take To End the War in Iran

Washington, D.C. — As Democrats regain control of Congress, a new analysis from the Center for American Progress argues that lawmakers must respond to the will of the American people and use every tool at their disposal to push for an end to the Iran war.

“The war in Iran is one of the few instances in American history where a president has engaged in sustained military action without any form of international legitimacy or authorization from Congress,” said Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at CAP and author of the column. “The new Congress must push to end this war and the steep economic costs it has inflicted on the American people.”

The column recommends that Congress take the following steps:

  • Cut off funding for the war effort in an appropriations package.
  • Refuse to authorize spending on the war.
  • Conduct aggressive oversight hearings and pursue impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
  • Pass war powers resolutions.
  • Propose an affirmative vision for a path forward on Iran and the Middle East.
