Washington, D.C. — Communities of color continue to face challenges in the third year of the recovery following the Great Recession. Although the economic outlook improves as economic growth stabilizes and job creation gradually accelerates, America’s families, particularly families of color, have suffered from high and long-term unemployment, desperately needing stronger economic growth.
CAP’s new report, to be released Thursday, shows that the benefits of this growth have not been equitably enjoyed and that communities of color are substantially less likely than whites to enjoy the opportunities that come from having a good job, owning one’s own home, and having a financial safety cushion in the form of health insurance, retirement benefits, and private savings. Stable economic growth will depend on having a strong, broad-based middle class making it imperative for future economic policies to take into account the challenges communities of colors face.
