PRESS CALL ADVISORY: New CAP—Partnership for New American Economy Report on Economic Benefits of Passing the DREAM Act

Washington, D.C. — On Monday, October 1, the Center for American Progress and the Partnership for a New American Economy will host a press call to release “The Economic Benefits of Passing the DREAM Act,” featuring Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; John Feinblatt, Chief Advisor for Policy and Strategic Planning to New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Chairman of the Partnership for a New American Economy; and report author Juan Carlos Guzmán of the University of Notre Dame. Overall this Center for American Progress report finds that the passage of the DREAM Act would add billions of dollars to the U.S. economy and create more than 1 million new jobs by 2030, demonstrating the potential of the proposed law to boost economic growth and improve our nation’s fiscal health.

This report presents an economic analysis that shows that the U.S. economy would experience a double boost should we grant a pathway to legal status to an estimated 2.1 million eligible youth in our country by passing the DREAM Act. First, the bill creates a strong educational incentive since eligible DREAMers must complete high school and some college or military service to qualify. Simply put, more education translates into better-paying jobs. Second, legal status itself allows DREAMers to use their skills to obtain better jobs in general. Overall we find that by 2030, eligible DREAMers will earn 19 percent higher wages than if the DREAM Act were not passed. As these DREAMers spend their earnings on things such as cars, houses, or iPods, more money would ripple through the American economy, supporting further economic growth and jobs, and benefit all Americans, native-born and immigrant alike.
