Washington, D.C. — Mayors from 10 big and small cities across the country will join the Center for American Progress to launch Mayors for Smart on Crime, a new initiative of city leaders pushing back against law and order policies that have been shown to be shortsighted and ineffective.
Instead of relying on outdated policies that merely drive up arrest numbers and incarceration rates, these mayors have been leading public safety and criminal justice reform efforts that are both effective and build trust with communities—including people of color and immigrants. These strategies include comprehensive investments in pretrial reform, how to address opioids or substance use, violence reduction, and opportunities for those formerly incarcerated or involved in the justice system.
Tomorrow, Thursday, February 1, at 11:30 a.m. ET, some of the mayors from the new Mayors for Smart on Crime initiative will discuss how fair and equitable crime-reduction strategies have worked in their cities, and why a smarter approach to crime nationwide matters right now. Other mayors who have joined the initiative to be announced on the call.
