Washington, D.C. — On Friday, January 18, the Center for American Progress and the Center for Strategic International Studies will host a press call with former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Center for American Progress Chair John Podesta to discuss the importance of protecting democracy and government assistance in the upcoming budget negotiations. Along with former Congressman Vin Weber (R-MN) and Daniel Runde of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Secretary Albright and John Podesta will release a bipartisan statement of principles signed by members of a high-level working group to emphasize the role of the United States in supporting democratic reforms and inclusive societies abroad as a central pillar of our national security strategy. The statement will also recommend more partnerships with nongovernmental institutions and our international allies to further this aim.
