EVENT ADVISORY: Peace Is Possible: An Alternative Vision for Israel and Palestine

Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to address a joint session of Congress. Meanwhile, the Center for American Progress is co-sponsoring a counter event for U.S. members of Congress, their staff, and the media as an alternative to Netanyahu’s address.

Speakers will outline a vision for peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians that will differ significantly from what Netanyahu outlines in his remarks to Congress. CAP is co-sponsoring the event alongside Americans for Peace Now, the Center for International Policy, Common Defense, the Middle East Democracy Center, and Win Without War.

The event will feature conversations with Palestinian and Israeli peace leaders, who will present five core principles for moving toward peace. Speakers will discuss realities on the ground, address the harmful role Netanyahu and his government have played, and offer perspectives on a path toward better governance, security, and peace for Israelis and Palestinians:

  • Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Jim McGovern (D-MA) will deliver remarks.
  • CAP President and CEO Patrick Gaspard and Breaking the Silence Executive Director Nadav Weiman will discuss their recent time together in the West Bank. Breaking the Silence is an organization made up of veteran Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers dedicated to shedding light on the situation in the occupied territories.
  • Palestinian activist Aziz Abu Sarah and Israeli peace activist Maoz Inon will deliver a message of hope and share their charter for peace. Inon lost both of his parents in the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, while Aziz Abu Sarah’s brother was tortured in Israeli prisons and died of his injuries. Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti will moderate the session.
