Washington, D.C. — With college costs skyrocketing, completion rates lagging, and student loan debt ballooning, the higher education challenges Americans face today are only growing more urgent. Often at the forefront of these challenges are accrediting agencies—the gatekeepers of billions of federal student aid dollars—who now find themselves teetering on the edge of a policy precipice and the cutting edge of transforming modern higher education. On Thursday, June 28, the Center for American Progress will host a conversation with contributors and responders of a new book, Accreditation on the Edge: Challenging Quality Assurance in Higher Education, to discuss the manifold efforts needed to reform accreditation in a way that meets the needs of the 21st-century student.
