Washington, D.C. — This week, the Bipartisan Artificial Intelligence Task Force released a report outlining a road map for future policy guardrails for artificial intelligence (AI). The comprehensive report represents an effort to seek common ground in Congress on fundamental issues such as privacy, worker protections, and safeguards against bias and discrimination in automated decision-making.
Dr. Alondra Nelson, distinguished senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in reaction:
This report focuses on the impact of AI across a variety of sectors, but it makes particularly clear that government agencies should be exemplars of AI’s responsible use, with attention to privacy, safety, and the wise stewardship of taxpayers’ time and money. Crucially, the report addresses civil rights and liberties issues, highlighting the role agencies play in protecting citizens. It recommends the uptake of content authenticity practices. And it rightly notes that the responsibility for improving this ecosystem lies across all actors in the AI life cycle, from developers to deployers.
Progress on protecting the American people from harm as new technologies develop has never been easy—and in a politically charged and polarized environment, it will not be. But it’s important to commend the good faith conversations being had by members of both parties toward implementing these safeguards at a time when tech CEOs are starting to call the shots in Washington. As the foremost creators of this technology, Americans bear responsibility for its safe use. This report’s recommendations provide Congress with a road map to meet the moment, and makes clear that the next Congress must act on AI legislation.
