ADVISORY: Secretary Sebelius Joins CAP, Olympic Medalists, and Experts to Mark Title IX’s 40th Anniversary

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, June 21, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will join the Center for American Progress for an event marking the 40th anniversary of Title IX.

The secretary, a former collegiate athlete herself, will give a keynote address on the law that has dramatically impacted women’s participation in athletics, from high school to college and beyond. Following the address, award-winning sports journalist Christine Brennan will lead distinguished panelists, including Olympians, educators, and Title IX experts, in a lively and informative discussion.

Since Title IX passed in 1972, thousands of women, including many of the events’ panelists, have benefited from the opportunities that the antidiscrimination law provides. From scholarships and increased presence on campuses to learning new physical and leadership skills, Title IX has allowed women to have a more equitable share of the American Dream. But what does the future hold for Title IX in an era of decreased funding levels for athletic departments, and how will this impact women on and off the field? Secretary Sebelius and the panelists will address these questions and others as CAP commemorates the anniversary of Title IX.
