ADVISORY: NRC Chair Allison Macfarlane to Discuss Future of Nuclear Power

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, October 25, Allison Macfarlane, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will join Tom Perriello, counselor to the Center for American Progress, for a conversation about the critical issues facing the nuclear power industry.

Nuclear power is our nation’s largest low-carbon power source, providing nearly 20 percent of our electricity. Over the last two decades, U.S. nuclear plant operators have shown an excellent record of operational safety and have greatly increased the operational performance of reactors.

Despite years of success, however, the nuclear industry still faces challenges. These include issues such as those raised by the meltdown at the Fukushima plant in Japan. The United States also seeks to examine questions about waste storage and disposal and possible impacts of small modular reactors on the nuclear energy landscape to determine the role of nuclear power in America’s energy future.
