Washington, D.C.—On International Women’s Day, the Center for American Progress will host a panel of experts to discuss the impact of President Donald Trump’s “Global Gag Rule” since its implementation over a year ago. Shortly after his inauguration, President Trump reinstated and expanded the Global Gag Rule, which prohibits abortion-related speech and activities by U.S.-funded, foreign nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The policy was instituted for the first time under former President Ronald Reagan in 1984 but was most recently rescinded by former President Barack Obama in 2009.
The Global Gag Rule affects global health programs that address health concerns, such as HIV and AIDS; maternal and child health; tuberculosis; malaria; Zika virus; family planning; reproductive health; and others. To make matters worse, NGOs are even prohibited from using private, non-U.S. funding to provide abortion care. Over the past year, Trump’s Global Gag Rule has proved to be a disastrous policy, causing numerous women and girls in the global south to go without access to vital health services, including maternal health care, family planning, and safe abortion.
The panel will be composed of experts with years of international experience fighting for reproductive health and rights. They will talk about how health care providers are responding to the rule; how women’s rights and development aid groups are mobilizing against it; and where to go from here.
