Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, September 4, the Center for American Progress will host a discussion about the importance of implementing the Common Core State Standards and aligned assessments to ensure long-term success for students in postsecondary education and the workforce. Former Michigan Gov. John Engler (R), Kentucky Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday, and New York Commissioner of Education John King will be featured speakers at the event.
The Common Core State Standards provide a clear picture of what students across the country need to know and be able to do for a successful future. The start of the 2013-14 school year marks a time when many states will begin measuring student performance using new, more-rigorous assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The release of the initial Common Core test results in Kentucky and New York underscores the importance of preparing the public for them and the challenge ahead for effective implementation of both the standards and assessments. States anticipate a significant drop in student test scores as a result of implementing Common Core-aligned assessments. While the Common Core will receive heightened attention during the upcoming school year as it becomes more apparent that students are not yet prepared for success in the global economy, it is imperative to remember that the Common Core initiative presents an opportunity to ensure that all students are receiving a high-quality education.
