ADVISORY: Experts to Discuss U.S.-China Relations Moving Toward a New Model of Major Power Relationship

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, February 20, the Center for American Progress will host a discussion on the release of a new collaborative report between CAP and the China-United States Exchange Foundation titled “U.S.-China Relations: Toward a New Model of Major Power Relationship.” The discussion will feature four of the key contributors to the report from both the American and Chinese delegations.

When then Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping first raised the prospect of “a new type of relationship between major countries” in 2012, he called for the United States and China to chart a new course for their bilateral relationship. Since this initial call, American and Chinese officials have worked to build a new model of major power relations, including an informal “shirt-sleeve summit” between President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping last year. As part of this effort, the Center for American Progress and the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation have partnered together to author a report on a new model of major power relations between the United States and China and to provide a vision for a comprehensive, positive relationship between the nations to work through differences and maximize opportunities.
