ADVISORY: EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to Headline CAP Discussion on Methane Pollution

Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress will host U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, Administrator Gina McCarthy on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at 10:00 am ET for a conversation about reducing methane pollution from the oil and gas sector. Administrator McCarthy will deliver a keynote address and take part in a one-on-one conversation with CAP President Neera Tanden.

Oil and gas operations are large sources of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and volatile organic compounds, which contribute to smog pollution that triggers asthma attacks and other respiratory diseases. In August, the EPA proposed the first-ever methane pollution standards that will require any new or modified oil and gas facilities to use readily available technology to curb methane leaks. The proposal is a major component of the Obama administration’s efforts to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 40 percent to 45 percent by 2025 and will aid in achieving the country’s overall greenhouse gas reduction targets.
