Washington, D.C. — On Tuesday, November 29, the Center for American Progress will host an event to discuss approaches to improving teaching effectiveness and whether the tools exist to do the job well. At the event a new report will be released finding that most of the investments in teacher professional development go to ineffective models. Authored by University of Virginia researcher Robert Pianta, the report concludes that the tools to help teachers strengthen their practice are woefully inadequate and that the nation needs more evidence-supported approaches to professional development.
A second paper slated to be released at the event, authored by Brown University Associate Professor John H. Tyler, focuses on the challenges for designing evaluation systems for high school teachers and describes emerging solutions. The event will also feature a panel of representatives from the front line—school districts, teacher unions, and educators—working to implement teacher-performance systems to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement.
