ADVISORY: CAP’s Neera Tanden, Sarah McBride to Discuss Gender Equity at TEDxMidAtlantic’s ‘EVE: Everyone Values Equality’

Washington, D.C. — On Monday, November 16, Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, and Sarah McBride, CAP Campaigns and Communications Manager for LGBT Progress, will be featured speakers at the TEDxMidAtlantic salon “EVE: Everyone Values Equality.” “EVE: Everyone Values Equality” will be an evening of ideas exploring the realities women face in the United States today and how to move toward a 21st century of equal opportunity regardless of gender and gender identity.

The event is presented by TEDxMidAtlantic in partnership with the D.C. Office of Human Rights.

Today, women are the primary, sole, or co-breadwinners in nearly two-thirds of American households. As Tanden will discuss in her remarks, the changing reality of today’s workforce presents many challenges for working women, who struggle to balance work and family obligations. Tanden’s remarks will center on the need for policies that would help improve the women’s leadership pipeline—such as paid family leave—and help Americans meet the demands of both work and family.

McBride’s remarks will focus on what it was like to come into her womanhood as a transgender person in a society that marginalizes women and how the fight for broader gender equality and LGBT rights are inextricably linked. In 2012, McBride made national headlines when she came out as transgender in the student newspaper at the end of her term as student body president at American University. McBride currently serves on the Board of Directors of Equality Delaware, the state’s primary lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, advocacy and educational organization.
