Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress will host four distinguished former national security policymakers on Tuesday, May 2, at 12:00 p.m. ET to assess the state of civil liberties and counterterrorism policy in the Trump era. As a candidate, President Donald Trump repeatedly cited the fear of terrorism in order to threaten civil liberties. President Trump, in openly musing that torture works and trying to ban Muslims from coming to the United States, represents a complete break from past administrations—including Republican ones—in so openly and directly rejecting the foundational rights on which the United States was built. In light of this, the panel will seek to identify the threats to civil liberties and human rights Americans should fear most in the coming years and discuss protections against such threats.
