D.C. Abortion Doula Explains Why Medication Abortion Is Necessary for In-Community Care

Medication abortion is an important tool for doulas to assist people in exercising their choice.

Doulas provide emotional, physical, informational, and cultural support to people at all stages of pregnancy, including abortion care. Doulas such as Raven Freeborn note the importance of patients being able to exercise choice in a safe setting surrounded by their support systems. Many of Raven’s patients face compounding barriers and inequities, and Raven emphasizes how doulas can mitigate and disrupt those challenges. Medication abortion provides an option that helps people exercise choice with dignity and within their communities.
