Washington, D.C. — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida scored a major political victory on Sunday, July 10, boosting his party’s majority in the upper house of the Japanese Diet. The win for the Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito coalition gives Kishida stable control of the legislature and up to three “golden” years without having to contest an election. That provides a window of opportunity for defense reforms, Kishida’s redistributionist “new capitalism” initiative, and perhaps even constitutional revision.
