Washington, D.C. — COVID-19 has drastically affected the United States over the past two years, resulting in a devastating loss of life, jobs, and economic security for millions of Americans. Yet despite the dire health and economic implications of the pandemic, the labor market and economy have recovered at a record pace, far outperforming any expectations from even one year ago. A successful recovery doesn’t happen magically but as a direct result of bold public investments that center working people, their families, and their communities. The American Rescue Plan (ARP), passed in March 2021, accomplished precisely that, infusing targeted investments at the national, state, and local levels to help mitigate the worst economic and health impacts of the pandemic.
To mark the one-year anniversary of this historic legislation, Center for American Progress President and CEO Patrick Gaspard and White House ARP Coordinator Gene Sperling will discuss how these targeted federal investments helped the country weather the pandemic and rebuild the economy, especially by centering low-income and working-class people in the recovery.
The event will include a panel of state and local policymakers who will discuss how they implemented these investments to keep individuals and families safe, alleviate poverty and financial hardship, and lay the groundwork for an equitable recovery. The panel will share what other policymakers and activists can learn from ARP policy interventions to help build a more robust and reliable economy for all.
