In the aftermath of the BP oil spill, the fate of gulf wildlife hangs in the balance. For large fish like Atlantic bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, albacore tuna, swordfish, and others that depend on the gulf as spawning grounds, gushing oil and toxic chemical dispersants could result in the loss of an entire generation—and that’s probably the best-case scenario. This catastrophe comes at an already-crucial moment in our relationship with the seas. More than ever before we are depending on fish as a source of food, but our current commercial fishing and fish farming practices are far from sustainable. As a result, many species have been pushed to the brink of extinction.
