PRESS CALL: Assimilation Today – New Evidence on the Advancement of Immigrants in America’s Culture and Economy

The Center for American Progress will host a telephonic press conference Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) EDT to discuss powerful new data on the assimilation rates of foreign born residents in the United States.

Washington, D.C.–Immigrants to the United States are assimilating at high rates, advancing fastest in the areas of citizenship and homeownership, notably in the first 18 years of residency, according to a new study of U.S. Census Bureau data to be released Sept. 1st by the Center for American Progress.

Despite claims from opponents that immigrants do not make valuable contributions to U.S. society and economy, the study also shows rising rates of earnings and high school completions. Overall, the robust integration of newcomers is continuing, occurring at high rates since 1990, regardless of their social or economic starting points. The study, “Assimilation Today: New Evidence Shows the Latest Immigrants to America Are Following in Our History’s Footsteps,” was conducted by Dowell Myers and John Pitkin, of the University of Southern California’s Population Dynamics Research Group.

The findings from this latest research—including benchmarks used to measure assimilation key states—will be discussed on a telephonic press conference sponsored by the Center for American Progress on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) EDT. Participants will include the report’s co-author, Dowell Myers; Clarisssa Martinez De Castro, Director of Immigration and National Campaigns for National Council of La Raza; David M. Abromowitz, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress who specializes in housing issues, and Angela M. Kelley, Vice President of Immigration and Advocacy for the Center for American Progress.
