Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress has announced that former Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, counter international terror section head, Yoram Schweitzer, has joined the organization as a visiting Senior Fellow. Schweitzer will focus on global trends in Salafi jihadism, counterterrorism, and shared Israeli-U.S. security concerns in the Middle East.
“Yoram comes to CAP with a distinguished career in the IDF and the academic world, where he has researched and written on many of the key aspects of the battle against terrorism,” said Vikram Singh, Vice President for National Security and International Policy at CAP. “His expertise and background will help CAP to further deepen its understanding of terrorism in the Middle East and will be an excellent resource as the organization continues to develop successful counterterrorism recommendations.”
Schweitzer is an expert on international terrorism and the head of the Institute for National Security Studies’ Program on Terrorism and Low Intensity Conflict. He has consulted with governments on counterterrorism strategy and has previously worked in the Israeli intelligence community. At CAP, he will research and publish on the Islamic State group and Al Qaeda, counterterrorism, and efforts to provide stability in the Middle East.
Schweitzer joins the Middle East program, which includes Senior Fellows Brian Katulis, Hardin Lang, Daniel Benaim, and Rudy deLeon; Senior Policy Analyst Muath Al Wari; Policy Analyst Peter Juul; and Research Associate Alia Awadallah. The program conducts regular analysis of national security and policy issues in the Middle East, including bilateral ties with regional states and counterterrorism. It also released a major report outlining a new strategy for U.S. engagement in the region and issues regular analyses on key issues such as the anti-Islamic State campaign, U.S.-Egypt relations, Saudi Arabia, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
