Washington, D.C. — The United States should repurpose its Asia energy initiatives to lead a clean energy transition in the region and help curb climate change, according to a new analysis from the Center for American Progress.
The column outlines the Trump administration’s fossil fuel-focused approach to energy in Asia, points to the clean energy transformation underway in the region, and offers recommendations on how the United States can reposition its program, known as Asia Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy (Asia EDGE).
Asia EDGE can be the vehicle to right President Donald Trump’s misguided approach to energy cooperation and climate in the world’s most consequential region, the column says. Some recommendations for the Asia EDGE program include:
- Boosting clean energy staffing in Asia-focused offices in Washington and in the economic, development, commercial, and trade finance sections of the embassies
- Creating and/or bolstering multiagency clean energy initiatives with key countries
- Leveraging the regional buzz over Asia EDGE and the upcoming launch of the new U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to prioritize public clean energy industry promotion events
- Broadening capacity-building initiatives traditionally aimed at policymakers and regulators
