Tackling Climate Change and Environmental Injustice
Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump signed an order to drastically shrink the size of the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah, a move that will remove valuable protections from these lands and pave the way for more mining and extraction of fossil fuels. In response Jenny Rowland-Shea, senior director of conservation at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Once again, the Trump administration is prioritizing billionaire polluters over Americans’ right to enjoy our public lands and pass them along to future generations. Attacks on America’s national monuments are attacks on the American way of life. These monuments and parks are national treasures and sacred Tribal sites—not commodities to be sold out to benefit wealthy developers.
