In recent remarks about America’s fiscal recovery, Secretary of Commerce John Bryson called out the “economic engine” of our oceans and coasts—our “blue economy.” Yet in many cases we simply don’t have the information required to best prioritize and balance the use and protection of these vibrant marine resources.
With this event, the Center for American Progress launches a new initiative to better define and quantify the value of our Blue Economy. We will focus on four ocean and coastal industries in various stages of understanding and development—sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, tourism and recreation, and coastal restoration—in a discussion with leaders from government, industry, and advocacy about the key role healthy oceans play in creating American jobs and enhancing prosperity in coastal regions.
Welcoming remarks:
Michael Conathan, Director of Ocean Policy, Center for American Progress
Featured speakers:
Jane Lubchenco, Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere
Miranda Ballentine, Director of Sustainability, Wal-Mart
Jim Moriarty, CEO, Surfrider Foundation
Moderated by:
