Washington, D.C. — Today, following the announcement that the Trump administration will withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, Frances Colón, senior fellow for International Climate Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is a grave mistake that disavows America’s leadership on the most urgent global challenge of our time. This reckless action weakens our alliances, cedes ground to geopolitical rivals, and jeopardizes the safety, health, and prosperity of Americans. While the climate crisis intensifies, the United States must be part of the solution—not isolate itself in service of special interests and short-term profits.
The Paris Agreement represents a historic commitment by the world to confront the climate crisis together. Walking away from this shared responsibility does not reflect strength, it’s a sign of weakness. Despite this setback, Americans at all levels—cities, states, businesses, and communities—are continuing to advance bold climate solutions. The United States cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. The time to lead is now.
