Washington, D.C. — Virginia has just guaranteed nearly all workers in the commonwealth access to paid family and medical leave, marking a major step forward for economic security and workplace protections. In response, Molly Weston Williamson, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Virginians fought for a more affordable future for their families, and now guaranteed paid leave is the law. State by state, paid leave is becoming the standard, and others will follow Virginia’s lead.
Workers should not have to sacrifice their financial stability in order to recover from illness, welcome a new child, or care for a family member in need. Paid family and medical leave is a core component of a modern economy that supports workers, families, and businesses alike. With this step, Virginia joins a growing number of states that recognize paid leave strengthens economic security, improves public health, and helps ensure that workers can remain active participants in the labor force throughout life’s major moments.
