Washington, D.C. — Today, the United States carried out air strikes against three Iranian nuclear sites. In response, Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
President Donald Trump has failed to provide the necessary leadership to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Iran. Instead of seeking a diplomatic solution as he pledged, that ultimately could have provided a stronger and longer guarantee that Iran would not develop a nuclear weapon, he has unilaterally dragged the American people into another Middle East war without the constitutionally mandated approval of Congress.
All attention should now be on the safety of American servicemembers and civilians in the region. My thoughts are with these Americans and their families tonight, as well as the Israeli and Iranian civilians who have been living under constant threat over the last week.
