Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate failed to advance both the Democratic proposal to extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits and the Republican alternative centered on health savings accounts and high-deductible plans. Millions of Americans are now on track to see their premiums more than double in 2026.
In response, Topher Spiro, senior fellow for Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Without action, more than 20 million Americans are facing massive premium hikes, and millions more will lose coverage altogether. Instead of uniting behind a popular clean extension of the enhanced premium tax credits, Senate Republicans are grasping at plans that shift costs onto patients, destabilize marketplaces, and have no chance of passing this Congress. The president and congressional Republicans together will own the chaos that will hit households on January 1, 2026.
