Washington D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump nominated Kathleen Sgamma, president of the oil and gas trade association Western Energy Alliance, to be director of the Bureau of Land Management. Sgamma is, notably, one of the authors of Project 2025’s extreme proposals to sell out national public lands for oil drilling. In response, Jenny Rowland-Shea, director of public lands at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
In case there was any question left about who the Trump administration is working for, Kathleen Sgamma’s nomination makes crystal clear that it is the oil and gas industry. Americans want their public lands and waters managed for everyone’s benefit. But Sgamma will be looking out for just one interest: oil and gas. Putting her at the helm of the largest land management agency will ensure that the oil industry gets richer at the expense of the American people’s right to their parks and treasured landscapes.
