Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden administration announced a $3 billion investment to replace hazardous lead pipes, a part of the administration’s continued investments in safe drinking water. In response, Jill Rosenthal, director of public health policy at the Center for American Progress, shared the following statement:
There is no safe level of exposure to lead, and it is especially dangerous for young children. This investment by the Biden administration will support state and local governments in strengthening public health, environmental, and economic outcomes as they rebuild aging water infrastructure. Today’s announcement, paired with the administration’s proposal to strengthen the Lead and Copper Rule, which would require water systems to replace lead pipes within 10 years, is a part of the nation’s largest investment in safe drinking water. This sweeping investment helps solve problems that communities have struggled to address for decades, accelerating the elimination of harmful lead pipes in communities throughout the United States.
