Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump did not have the authority to use emergency powers to impose his massive country-specific tariffs last year. In response, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Trump’s tariffs have hurt millions of families by making life more unaffordable for them. The Supreme Court’s ruling is welcome, but it can’t undo all the pain he’s caused. The average family paid $1,200 in tariff costs since Trump entered office. Since his so-called “Liberation Day,” American consumers and manufacturers have paid more for the goods they need, the country has lost thousands of manufacturing jobs, and business bankruptcies have spiked to their highest level in years. Increasingly, our trading partners are finding new markets, often in direct defiance of Donald Trump.
America is less prosperous and weaker as a direct result of Trump’s tariffs. The court’s ruling adds even more uncertainty to the long list of challenges facing the American economy—challenges that are the direct result of this president’s reckless actions.
