Washington, D.C. — After reports that the Pentagon has deployed Marines to Los Angeles on Monday to respond to immigration protests, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Sending America’s Marines into an American city is dangerous. Marines are a fighting force trained for war against enemies of our country. They should not be used against Americans in our cities. President Donald Trump’s actions violate 150 years of law designed to stop would-be dictators from using America’s military against Americans. This is the most expansive overreach by the federal government in our lifetimes and Americans from all political persuasions and from all walks of life should object. President Trump’s dangerous escalation is a mission these troops did not sign up for and it puts them and the people of Los Angeles at greater risk of violence. He is crossing the Rubicon.
