STATEMENT: Senate Must Vote for War Powers Resolution

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate is expected to vote on whether to advance a war powers resolution that would prevent President Donald Trump from continuing the conflict against Iran. In response, Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Senate lawmakers must assert their authority and express disapproval of this unlawful and reckless war. Any American president should use military force only when absolutely necessary, and only with the consent of Congress and the American people. Trump not only failed to obtain consent but has offered conflicting and confusing justifications for U.S. military action against Iran. This is a consequential decision, not unlike the 2003 authorization for use of military force in Iraq. Opposition to this resolution is a vote for a needless war that has already come at a massive cost to the American people. And those members voting against it will live with that as their legacy.
