Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement after House passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act:
House Republicans just voted to make the largest cut ever to health care for working-class Americans. If signed into law, more than 14 million people would lose coverage and health care costs would skyrocket. The largest-ever Medicaid cuts, coupled with the cuts to food assistance and higher energy costs, would leave America’s most vulnerable families scrambling to meet their basic needs. To make matters worse, this bill would explode the debt by trillions, increasing consumer borrowing costs by jacking up interest rates for things like a home mortgage or credit card. And for what—to give billionaires even more wasteful tax breaks? That’s why House Republicans tried to push this bill through in the dead of night, voting for a bill most of them hadn’t even read.
Donald Trump and Mike Johnson may enjoy a more restful holiday weekend, but passing the One Big “Beautiful” Bill Act in the House is nothing more than a Pyrrhic victory. The Senate—and, more importantly, the American people—will have their say soon.
