STATEMENT: New Justice Department Lawsuit Underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s Commitment To Making Rental Housing More Affordable

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a new lawsuit against RealPage, a technology company accused of colluding with landlords to unjustifiably raise prices for renters. Emily Gee, senior vice president for Inclusive Growth at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement reacting to the lawsuit:

The cost of rental housing has been squeezing families across America for far too long, and illegal price-fixing schemes are part of the problem. No company should be able to get rich by stifling competition to make families pay more than fair to put a roof over their head, but that’s exactly what RealPage is alleged to have done. The breadth of this problem is profound, with RealPage amassing roughly 80 percent of the market for such software. We commend the Biden-Harris administration for using every tool in its toolbox to bring down rent costs.
