STATEMENT: Neera Tanden on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act’s Fourth Anniversary

Washington, D.C. — Four years ago today, President Barack Obama signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which helps female and minority workers challenge discriminatory pay in the courts. CAP President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement marking the legislation’s fourth anniversary:

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was a significant step forward in eliminating the gender pay gap. As we celebrate the enactment of this landmark legislation four years ago, we must remember the inexcusable reality that women continue to earn only about 77 percent of what men earn. It’s past time that we act to redress this injustice. We urge Congress and the president to waste no time and enact fair pay reforms as soon as possible.
