Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Gerry Connolly’s (D-VA) family announced that he passed away after a battle with esophageal cancer. Following the news of his death, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
I was very sad to learn about Rep. Connolly’s passing. A fighter until the end, it speaks to his character and strength that even in the last few months as he was battling cancer he was a leader in the fight against the Department of Government Efficiency and the excesses of the Trump administration. He cared deeply about the United States’ relationships abroad and was a stalwart defender of democracy around the world. He was also an important voice in combating kleptocracy and corruption. Connolly was a pragmatist in the best sense of the word, he used his nine terms in Congress to repeatedly deliver for his constituents and the country.
