STATEMENT: John Podesta on the Failure to Protect Antarctica’s Southern Ocean

Washington, D.C. — Following the conclusion of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources meeting in Hobart, Australia, where a proposal to create the world’s largest marine sanctuary in Antarctica’s Southern Ocean failed for the third time, Center for American Progress Chair John Podesta released the following statement:

The continent of Antarctica proves that the global community is capable of putting science ahead of exploitation and managing a global commons for the good of all humanity. Unfortunately, a few nations have seen fit to engage in a new Cold War over Antarctic marine protected areas, meaning those universally accepted principals that prioritize conservation and collaboration will senselessly continue to stop at the water’s edge.
