Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for the abolishment of the U.S. Department of Education.
In response, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
The Department of Education can’t be closed without congressional approval. This absurd order doesn’t change that.
We should all be working to improve educational outcomes for our kids—supporting vulnerable students, making sure there’s a qualified teacher in every classroom, and holding bad actors accountable—but we can’t do any of this without a fully functioning Education Department. Trump’s interest in destroying it reveals how little he really cares about our children’s futures.
