STATEMENT: Guilty Verdict Holds Trump Accountable for Election Interference

Washington, D.C. — Today, a jury convicted former President Donald Trump of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This prosecution was about so much more than a hush money payment or falsified records. It was about former President Trump’s repeated efforts to interfere in our free and fair elections. The jury saw through Trump’s effort to hoodwink voters. It’s a disturbing example of criminal behavior in which Trump will do anything for power, whether it’s paying people off to prevent voters from learning about his scandals or inciting an insurrection on January 6. Trump is a dangerous threat to democracy and this verdict shows how accountability can and must happen if our democracy is to survive. The rule of law triumphed here. Now, the legal system must move swiftly to pursue justice in the other cases against Trump. No one is above the law, not even a former president.
