STATEMENT: Granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelans Will Help the Economy, Address Root Causes of Migration

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, the Biden administration announced that it will be extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to nearly 500,000 Venezuelans. Following the announcement, Debu Gandhi, senior director of Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The Biden administration’s decision to grant TPS to nearly 500,000 Venezuelans will have benefits that extend far beyond the recipients themselves. Receiving the work permission that comes along with TPS allows migrants to better support themselves and their families and contribute to the U.S. economy. Conditions in Venezuela continue to be unstable and unsafe due to multiple humanitarian, security, environmental, and other challenges. Research shows that TPS can also ameliorate the root causes of migration in the first place because recipients are able to send larger amounts of money home, helping their family members who want to remain in Venezuela stay there.
