Emmanuel Macron’s landslide victory to become the youngest-ever president of France is a triumph for democracy in the face of a hard-right, xenophobic, anti-European Union opponent. The French people also defeated Russian propaganda and hacking designed to tip the election against Mr. Macron. Mr. Macron called for unity and committed to helping French citizens of all backgrounds, races, and faiths have opportunities to succeed. By rejecting divisive rhetoric, the people of France showed that political change need not be based on pessimism and hatred. Progressive policies are best suited to help people achieve their potential with good education, fair wages, and dignity. I want to congratulate Mr. Macron. We look forward to sharing ideas with his team on ways to build more inclusive prosperity for all of our people.
