STATEMENT: CAP’s Vikram Singh on Ash Carter’s Nomination for Defense Secretary

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Barack Obama will nominate Ashton Carter to be the next U.S. secretary of defense. Carter is a former deputy secretary of defense and currently serves on the advisory council for the Center for American Progress’ India: 2020 program. CAP Vice President for National Security and International Policy Vikram Singh responded to Carter’s nomination with the following statement:

Dr. Carter is a fantastic choice for secretary of defense at a very critical time. He is an innovator who understands every corner of the Pentagon. He is also a strategic thinker who can help navigate an increasingly complex global security environment.

Dr. Carter is a true public servant, deeply committed to America’s armed forces and to every one of our men and women in uniform. We will miss Dr. Carter’s contributions to CAP’s work, particularly on the U.S.-India relationship, but the country will benefit from having him back at the Pentagon.
