STATEMENT: CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Urges House to Vote Against Nonprofit Bill

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, the House will vote on a measure (H.R. 9495) that would allow the government to unilaterally strip the tax-exempt status from any nonprofit organization the treasury secretary accuses of supporting terrorist organizations. Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement urging lawmakers to reject this bill:

This pernicious bill is a tool for tyranny. It would give any presidential administration, especially the incoming one, absolute power over American civil society as it strips away due process protections. Our representatives must absolutely vote down this dangerous bill, which would be a free speech-killing nuclear weapon in the hands of Donald Trump.
